August 11: Divine Words for Encouragement and Comfort (John 17:20)

Worship Preparation - August 11, 2013

Prayer and Bible Reading Guide - August 11-17, 2013

Sermon Summary

We will continue the series on prayer giving attention to the intercessory prayer of Jesus in John 17. This prayer highlights for us the hope and encouragement that we as believers find in the petitions of Jesus as he is
preparing to go to the Father after his death on the cross. The weight of his petitions are based on who he is and all that he has done and will do on behalf of those who would believe the words of the disciples.

Review and Apply

  1. What are the implications of eternal life meaning more than a future existence? (see 2 Peter 1:3-8)
  2. How would you explain to others that Jesus did not pray for "the world" but only for those whom the Father had given Him? (see John 8)
  3. How is the "oneness" in John 17 made known to us? What is the basis of this "oneness"?
  4. How does the oneness of Christ with the Father and our oneness with Christ and the Father give us hope and encouragement in uncertainties and troubles?
