August 18: Hebrews 12:1-2
Hebrews 12:1-2 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. (ESV)
Hebrews encourages us to consider those who have walked by faith, and imitate their example as we run with endurance the race set before us. We don't pretend that any Christian has ever been a perfect example. That's why Hebrews is careful to say that we should be looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith. But nonetheless, we may be encouraged by brothers and sisters in Christ who have finished their course with joy. So each year at Christ Covenant, we take one week to look at God's grace in the life of a Christian from history. This year we will consider the life and work of John Calvin, who was used by God for the building up of the church not only in Geneva Switzerland in the 1600s, but also for the good of the Protestant church in the western world ever since through his writings.
Desiring God has published a brief biogprahy of John Calvin by T. H. L. You can buy it in the narthex this Sunday or download online (free).
