July 28: The Grace of God in the Life of William Wilberforce
Prepare for Sunday morning worship by using the guide below.
This Sunday Levi Regalado will continue teaching Challenging Questions Christians Face. This class will be held at 10:00 in the Youth Room.
I think the challenges of walking as a Christian are not to be ignored. We need help. Help comes often from mentors, examples or others who can encourage us. I find great help coming from past saints who have lived faithful and successful lives. Since 2004, I have preached one biographical sermon each year on a saint whose grace-marked life has had a lasting impact on the church and world. I do this for a number of reasons. First, I believe it is scriptural. In Romans 15:4, Paul says, "God places the saints of old before us as examples to instruct us in life and faith." Second, it is encouraging. Are you not encouraged as you see God’s grace in the lives of imperfect saints? This year we will consider God's grace in the life of William Wilberforce. While some may be familiar with his life, sadly, William Wilberforce’s name is fairly unrecognizable today. He was a man of unmatched wit, humor, and kindness, gaining a national reputation in England in the early 18th century. Yet he was a Christian, one for whom faith mattered deeply. His life was changed through it and we can learn much from it. Consider watching the movie Amazing Grace. It is a well done sketch of his life.
