November 4: Christians and Government (Matt 22:15-22)
Matthew 22:15-22 "Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's."
It is from the midst of a confrontation between Jesus and the religious leadership that we find our Lord's teaching about the relationship between the church and the state. Jesus displays a marvel-producing rebuttal that leaves his attackers without response. When the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus either into sedition of Roman government or idolatry toward the faith of Israel, Jesus brings balance in which men and women render to Caser what is Caeser's and to God what is God's. In this he gives the church implicit but clear guidelines on how we are to walk in harmony between these two responsibilities, acknowledging that our allegiance to God supercedes all other relationships.
