Read & Swim Program at Cedar Point

An Update from Cedar Point

The school year is winding down and we are gearing up for another fun summer at Cedar Point! We are currently serving well over a hundred students each afternoon in Homework Help. Our last day of tutoring for the school year is Thursday, May 25. We still have lots of kids coming with lots of homework so we still need you even though the end is in sight!

We will begin our summer Read and Swim program on June 12. Our schedule will be a little different from past years. We will read Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 3:00-5:00pm in the Community Center. Students who read all three times in a given week will "earn" a swim time at New Life Camp on Thursday afternoon or evening each week. Because of our increased numbers, we will be adding an additional swim time for our youngest swimmers which will include swim lessons. We will continue to hold our separate girls and boys swim times later in the day. Keeping the girls and boys separated at swim time allows our Muslim students to participate. We will also be adding an on-site party on Thursdays for those who choose not to swim or whose English is not adequate for understanding pool rules and safety procedures. We are also adding a lending library this summer so we can keep kids reading as much as possible!

We need you!!!

Summer is often a time of academic decline, as our students are not in their English as a Second Language classrooms or experiencing English immersion. We would love for each student to be able to read one-on-one with a tutor. This is the most effective method, as students often are making the same reading mistakes over and over unless they are gently corrected. We also realize that everyone is busy during the summer, and schedules are constantly changing. This is another one of our "come as you can" opportunities. We do not ask you to sign up for any specific days or frequency. You also do not have to serve the entire two hours on any given day. If you can come for thirty minutes, we'd love to have you join us! We are happy to verify community service hours for students who volunteer.

If you are interested in serving, there are a few things we need from you.

1. We need an application on file. If you have filled one out previously, but your important information has changed - please let us know. There will be applications at the volunteer orientations.

2. If you are 18 or over, we require a yearly background check. We cover the cost of this check.

3. You must attend one summer volunteer orientation. The dates for these are listed below. If you are unable to make any of these, please let me know.

Orientations are held in the Cedar Point Community Center and are scheduled as follows:

May 30 at 11:00am
May 31 at 3:00pm and 7:00pm
June 1 at 7:00pm

We also need books for our lending library!

We are accepting books in good condition - early readers through middle school level chapter books. We will be accepting book donations at any of our orientations and at Homework Help (Monday-Thursday 2:30-5:30pm in the community center) until the end of the school year.

Below is a flyer detailing this summer program. Please RSVP to to attend an orientation. We hope you can join us for another summer of reading fun!
