September 23: A New Strong - Meekness (Matt 5:5)
We are continuing our study this week through the beatitudes at the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. We are looking at Matt 5:5, "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." Meekness is seen by our world as a great weakness, the spineless niceness similar to the traits found in a lap dog. However, Jesus teaches that meekness is actually essential to true Christianity. Far from being a shortcoming of courage, meekness is rather the strength and self-control to steer a steady course even in the midst of difficulty. Sinclair Ferguson said, "It is the humble strength that belongs to the man who has learned to submit to difficult situations and people knowing that in everything God is working for his good." Thus meekness denotes an uncommon inward strength, resulting in a faith-filled steadiness in the various circumstances of life.
