The Life and Mission of Jesus
Beginning February 2 we will pick up in the gospel of Matthew from where we finished last summer. Previous chapters summarized the teaching of Jesus in what is known as the Sermon on the Mount, but these next chapters (8-12) record the miracles and ministry of Jesus. He demonstrates his power over the created order, diseases, and demons, thus legitimizing his claim to be the Messiah. This portion from Matthew’s gospel is a call to 1) rest in the authoritative power of the Messiah, 2) and to understand and embrace the glorious mission of the Messiah, 3) while preparing to face the enemies of the Messiah. Matthew shows what it means to truly follow the Messiah in the good, glorious and the difficult times. What is life like in this kingdom of glory while yet on earth?
